A war in the Ghanaian ring looms large with the battle lines drawn for what could be one of the biggest fights in recent years between undefeated Commonwealth Lightweight champion, Richard Oblitey Commey and local showman, Emmanuel Tagoe, a former IBF Continental champion.
Tagoe next fights next week when he faces Filipino boxer, Joebert Delos Reyes in a clash for the WBA International Lightweight belt in Accra, but he is thinking about what next afterwards and has his mind set on the highly rated Commey.
Tagoe, managed by Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan is apparently furious with suggestions Commey had said on a radio programme in Accra that he will easily defeat the boxer nicknamed Game Boy.
Commey holds a perfect career record (21-0, 19 KOs) but Tagoe's team believes he will meet a real match in the Game Boy who is also unbeaten since suffering a 5th round stoppage in his very first career fight back in 2004 23-1, 10 KOs).
"Game Boy has called for Richard Commey. Richie Commey was bluffing that he can beat Game boy or anybody in the ring. He's a Lightweight boxer so Game Boy says he's ready for him," BabyJet Promotions CEO, Sammy Anim Addo has exclusively told Allsports.com.gh.
"If you want to be a champion, you face the best and it will be a good fight for both of them so if Richard Commey is ready, Game Boy says he's ready," Mr. Anim Addo added.
But in sharp contrast, Michael Amoo-Bediako, the UK-based manager of Commey has dismissed the challenge of Tagoe, insisting that his IBF world rated number 9 boxer will be retrogressing should he take up the fight against Tagoe who is not in any of the world ratings.
"At this moment in time, it's not a fight that I would consider for my fighter. Richard is ranked #9 in the IBF, #14 in the WBA and #16 WBC whereas Tagoe is not in any of the world rankings so it would be a backward step for my ward," Amoo-Bediako also told Allsports.com.gh exclusively from his London base.
He added a pledge though: "If Tagoe were to enter any of the four main governing bodies' world rankings, then yes we would consider and we would be confident of victory."
So the ball certainly has been thrown into the corner of Tagoe who faces Filipino hard puncher, Joebert Reyes at the Accra Sports Stadium on April 24, but Team Tagoe are unwavering in their own belief in their boxer nicknamed Game Boy.
"There is one unique thing about Game Boy, he fights with whatever style the opponent comes with. If you are an orthodox he knows how to fight you, if you are coming as a southpaw he knows how to fight you and he's difficult to beat on punches," BabyJet Promotions CEO, Sammy Anim Addo countered.
