Empoli midfielder Afriyie Acquah considers MLS move

At least one team in Major League Soccer is interested in adding Ghanaian midfielder Afriyie Acquah to its roster this summer.

Acquah, 27, currently plays for Empoli in Italy’s Serie A and has received an offer from an MLS club as well as interest from elsewhere, a source told Pro Soccer USA.

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders were previously linked to Acquah in the winter, though the source would not specify which MLS club is currently in negotiations for the player.

Acquah has been a regular contributor to the Ghana men’s national team since 2012, with one goal in 29 international appearances. He is also expected to be part of Ghana’s team for the Africa Cup of Nations, which runs from June 21 to July 19 in Egypt.

Acquah has spent most of his career in Italy, though a press release by Sicilian club Palermo indicates that it acquired Acquah via free transfer from D.C. United’s youth academy in February 2010.

Acquah spent two years at Palermo, one of which was spent on loan at Parma, then was sold in 2012 to Bundesliga’s 1899 Hoffenheim, who immediately loaned him back to Parma. Acquah never played a competitive Bundesliga match and was also loaned to Sampdoria for one season while under contract in Germany.

Acquah moved to Torino in 2015 where he was a teammate of current Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez.

He moved to Empoli last summer.
