On loan striker Danny Welbeck has been called up to the Senior England squad for tonight`s game against his native Ghana.

Welbeck, 20, will replace Spurs winger Aaron Lennon who withdrew due to a precautionary slight twinge in his hamstring.

With that it now looks like the youngster will turn his back on representing Ghana after initially admitting talks about possibly playing for the World Cup quarter finalists.

My mum and dad are from Ghana so I am eligible and I saw a person from the Ghana FA after a Sunderland game once in the players' lounge." he admitted to Metro.co.uk.

"I spoke to him briefly after the game and that's all that happened. The other lads have been going on about it but that's all it is."

It`s unlikely that Welbeck, who has had an outstanding season with Sunderland, will start but may feature later in the game.

Reacting after the announcement Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was more than delighted for the 20-yeard-old and believes it`s a testament to his successful loan period on Wearside.

Speaking to SAFC.com, he said, "its great news for Sunderland and for the boy who really deserves the accolade.

'It's testament to what he's achieved while being here that he not only has played for the Under 21s regularly this season but now will get the chance to meet up with the England squad which is valuable experience in itself, but also possibly getting a run-out at Wembley will be a great opportunity for the kid to show what he's all about.'

Since joining the Black Cats in the summer, Welbeck has scored six goals and has one assist to his name but suffered a minor knee and hamstring injury which kept him out for over two months.
