Ghana midfielder Michael Essien returned to action on Wednesday night after serving a three-match ban by the English Football Association.

The Ghana ace excelled as Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the Carling Cup.

The midfielder was sent off in the league clash against Derby last month for dangerous play which led to his suspension.

While the Ghanaian player has been criticized in certain quarters for his tough style of play, Chelsea coach Avram has jumped to the defense of his player.

Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel have been sent off in recent months and Grant questioned Chelsea's recent treatment from referees.

"If you are looking at the red card that Essien got, other players did more aggressive fouls but were not punished," Grant said.

"Essien, Drogba and Mikel didn't hurt any player from the other team and it was a red card. The other [Arsenal] game: that is very aggressive against Chelsea, maximum is a yellow card.

"I have a feeling because there are too many incidents.''

Essien's return is a boost for the Black Stars as it will keep him fit for the African Cup of Nations.
