Even if I don’t do it, my kids will do it – Gyan talks atonement for 2010 World cup penalty miss

Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed he is eager to atone for his painful penalty miss at the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Uruguay.

Ghana was one step away from securing a historic semi final berth when a penalty was awarded in the last minutes of extra time in the quarter final encounter.

With the entire footballing world watching and Africa’s hopes pinned on one man, Asamoah Gyan; the striker kissed the cross bar with his shot and Ghana subsequently lost via shootout to their opponents.

The penalty miss caused a major heartbreak across Africa but was mostly felt in Ghana as Gyan’s status moved from hero to zero.

Till date the striker says that miss still haunts him and he tells of how the mood was in camp a day after the disaster unfolded.

“It was a disaster, it was crazy, but I was a bit calm. I couldn’t sleep the whole night, I cried till morning, my face was swollen due to the tears”, he told TV3 Sports.

After 2010, Gyan has seen opportunities to expiate his football sins slip away. He was captain when Ghana’s 2014 World Cup campaign ended up being a fiasco.

The 34 year also failed as captain in leading Ghana to the 2018 Mundial.

At his age and injuries limiting his time on the pitch, Gyan sees the clock tick away gradually and perhaps an opportunity to redeem himself now a distant reality.

However, he says he has not given up; the all time top scorer for Ghana believes he will make amends one way or the other even if not through football.

As someone who is obsessed with atoning for his penalty miss, Gyan ridiculously has even suggested that his children might eventually bail him out if he fails.

“I was waiting for another chance because I knew I will redeem myself another day,” he said.

“If not in terms of football, I think in terms of something (else). Something might happen, because I see myself as a good man”.

“Because I am a good man, I have a clean heart so I feel like even if I don’t do it, my kids will do it”, he concluded
