Former Ghana International Bashiru Gambo has revealed why he quit the Black Stars despite being at the peak of the career at the time he retired from national duty.
Gambo, who featured for the national team between 2000 and 2003 says he personally called it a quit due to the lack of transparency on the part of the GFA.
The Black Stars in 2000 participated in the inauguration of Abuja international stadium in Nigeria and this according to Gambo led to his surprise exit from the national team.
As part of the commissioning of the stadium, the country decided to play a four nations tournament with countries like Ghana, Cameroon, Oman and Nigeria.
However, Gambo in an interview with Don Summer of Angel FM in Kumasi explaining why he stopped playing for Ghana indicated that, the nation’s football governing body then were not transparent, saying they under-declared the participation fee the Black Stars were to receive by playing in the four nation tournament in Abuja, Nigeria.
The former King Faisal midfielder averred that players who participated in the tournament did not benefit from the money given to the FA by the Nigerian governor. .
“Due to my performance at club level, I got friends from Nigeria. Yakubu Aiyegbeni was my closest friend then so during the tournament I decided to sleep in the same room with him and it was through him that I realized the FA was using us for their personal gains.”
“Whiles in the room I had some conversations with Yakubu. I told him their governor has given the GFA $70,000 as participation fee. As soon as I said that, he made it known that the governor gave Ghana $700,000 which means the players were being fooled.”
“After that unscrupulous behavior on the part of the FA, when I got to my club in Germany, I wrote letters to Alhaji Jawula, Oheneba Charles and E.T Mensah that they shouldn’t call me up again. So I personally quit the national team because of lack of transparency”
