Former Black Stars goalkeeper Leonard Moffatt, has expressed interest in becoming a goalkeeper’s trainer for the Black Stars should his services be needed by the Ghana Football Association.
The former goalie made this known during an interview with a local Radio Station in Columbus Ohio, USA, his current base over the weekend as Ghana’s dismal performance in the just ended 2012 AFCON hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon was discussed.
In the interview, he questioned why the Ghana technical team failed to name an experienced goalkeeper for their 2012 AFCON campaign, something that became a major talk during the competition after goalkeeper, Adam Larsen Kwarasey’s poor showing for the Black Stars.
“Being a member of the technical team and in charge of goalkeeping, I think Eddie Ansah should have convinced the head Coach to include an experienced goalkeeper for the competition” he said.
He said dropping Richard Kingson and not including Heart of Oak’s Sammy Adjei both experienced goalkeepers was a bad decision by the technical team. Asked if he would have included unattached Richard Kingson in the squad if he was the Stars goalie trainer he said “Being my first choice goalkeeper for over five years and featuring in almost all the qualifying matches plus his gallant performance in past tournaments including the last Nations Cup in Angola, I would have recommended we include him in our provisional squad and monitor his performance during our training camp where a decision would be made”. Coach Moffatt, who guided Columbus Soccer Academy to place second in last season’s Youth Soccer League in Columbus currently trains and scouts for goalkeepers for most European teams.
