Ex-Kotoko defender Awal Mohammed urges government to pay salaries of GPL players

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko defender, Awal Mohammed is urging government to come to the aid of Ghanaian clubs by helping them pay the salaries of players as the Corona Virus crisis continues to wreak havoc to the sporting industry.

The upsurge in the Corona Virus situation in the country has caused the Ghana Premier League and other football competitions to be on break since middle of March 2020.

The situation has put clubs in financial distress and according to former Maritzburg United center back, Awal Mohammed, government needs to come on board and support clubs, even beyond this period.

The Ethiopian based defender who has played for clubs in countries like South Africa, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait believes that to make the local league attractive, government must support clubs by at least paying salaries of players.

He told Joy Sports, “If you go to Ethiopia, it’s the government who take care of everything, so the moment the government takes care of the league, then you don’t have problem.

“Not only in Ethiopia, In Saudi (Arabia) Kuwait, they have good sponsors then the government also pays the salaries of players.

“So that’s why we are facing problem here in Ghana…Only salaries for players, then I think the league will be attractive,” he concluded.
