FLASHBACK: How CK Akonnor’s Hearts of Oak lost to Maxwell Konadu’s Kotoko in 2012

Before they earned appointments to manage any of the National teams, coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor and Maxwell Konadu clashed in the Ghana Premier League when they both managed two of the glorious clubs in Ghana, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko respectively.

Hearts of Oak employed the services of Akonnor who had only managed Sekondi Eleven Wise. Ck was brought in to replace his predecessor Serbian, Nebojša Vu?i?evi?, as head coach.

Asante Kotoko on the other also elevated Maxwell Konadu to the position as head coach a year after working as an assistant coach of the club. The former Porcupine goal poacher also replaced a Serbian coach by name, Bogdan Korak.

Hearts of Oak were in search of their 21st league trophy and had managed to bring on experience winger Laryea Kingston with Sammy Adjei in the post to beef up their squad.

Konadu led Kotoko to win the league that season and Hearts of Oak relieved Akonnor of his duties but Maxwell Konadu earned dream job working as an assistant coach of the national team.

Years down the line, Akonnor joined Kotoko and led them to a remarkable feat in the CAF Confederation Cup whiles winning the NC Special Competition trophy. Akonnor’s big leap earned him a spot as the assistant coach of the Black Stars.

Fast-forward to 2020 and Akonnor finally gets appointed as the head coach of the national team and Maxwell Konadu returns to Kotoko as head coach. Ghanaweb makes a throwback to the big game which saw Hearts of Oak lose to Kotoko in a game that could have ended in a stalemate at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Porcupines had taken the early lead through Kofi Nti Boakye’s header in the first half. With just a minute to end the game, Mahatma Otoo pulled parity in a magnificent manner scoring a powerful free-kick.

Kotoko returned to the center of the pitch and in a matter of 20 seconds, Micheal Akufo restored Kotoko’s lead in a remarkable fashion which has left lasting memories in the eyes and minds of many fans who watched the game across the globe.
