Five-day zone C Basic School Basic festival ends

Kwahu Tafo (E/R), July 4, GNA - A Five day zone C Basic School Sports Festival made up of participants from the Kwahu South, Afram Plains, East Akim, Birim North and Fanteakwa Districts has ended at Kwahu Tafo in the Kwahu South District.

The over 500 athletes from basic schools in the five Districts participated in athletics, table tennis, volleyball, netball and football during the Festival to select a team to form the nucleus of the regional team for participation in the National Sports Festival. Birim North District collected three gold, one silver and three bronze medals to place first with Kwahu South District picking the second position with three gold, one silver and two bronze medals while East Akim District had two gold, three silver and three bronze medals to place third.

The fourth position went to Fanteakwa District who had two silver and two bronze medals with the Afram Plains District taking the fifth position with one silver medal.

Kwahu South District beat East Akim District 2-1 to lift the football trophy.

In his closing remarks, the acting Kwahu South District Director of Education, Mr George Diko said sports is a significant basic tool used in educating children not only to acquire skills and the right attitude to life but also helps them to learn how to obey rules and regulations as well as develop team work to enhance their educational standards. He said participating in sports is to be a forum to educate the youth to be tolerant, show humility and patience and to accept decisions that might go against them no matter how unpleasant they may be during their life time.

Mr Diko who is also the Birim North District Director of Education advised the officials, athletes and players to make use of the lessons and skills acquired during the games to enhance their living standards. He commended officials and the athletes for comporting themselves and displaying a high sense of competitiveness, fairness and fair play towards the successful end of the festival.

The District Director of Education advised athletes who would be selected to form the Regional team to be disciplined, dedicated and to train hard to win more laurels for the region.
