Asamoah Gyan is one of the greatest, if not the greatest – football players to emerge from Ghana. Gyan is Ghana’s most capped international player and the country’s leading goal scorer with 51 national team strikes. He has played in big matches at the World Cup, African Cup of Nations, and in a variety of domestic leagues around the world. In October 2018, Gyan was brought back into the Ghana national team fold. The 32-year-old was called up for the Black Stars’ African Cup of Nations matches against Sierra Leone. The call-up ended a one-year absence from the national team, but now that he is back, Gyan can continue to build on his brilliant international career.

Still in his early 30s, Gyan has plenty of years ahead of him in football. However, the Ghana superstar has also reached a point in which football fans can look back and admire his work.

Penalty against Uruguay

While it isn’t a moment Gyan looks back on with a smile, his penalty kick miss against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup in South Africastill marked a huge moment for him. The match between Ghana and Uruguay is remembered as one of the tournament’s best. Seconds remaining in extra-time, Luis Suarez’s blatant handball gave Ghana a penalty with no time left in the period. They were unsuccessful and missed out on the semi-finals. It was still a great run that will be remembered by fans of the Black Stars.

Becoming a star at Rennes

Months before starring at the World Cup, Gyan rose to prominence with French Ligue 1 club Rennes. He became a popular figure at the club thanks to scoring 13 goals during the 2009-10 Ligue 1 season. Although the team only finished ninth, Gyan’s goal scoring exploits raised his profile and helped influence English Premier League team Sunderland to pay £13 million for his signature in 2010. According to onesource source, it was the highest transfer fee ever paid by Sunderland at the time.

Scoring 50 international goals

In June 2017, Gyan became the first Black Stars player to reach the 50 goals mark. Gyan slotted a header into the back of Ethiopia's net to achieve the milestone. Since scoring his 50th, Gyan has only added one more to the tally. However, now back with the national team, more goals could be on the horizon.

Three UAE Pro League titles

Gyan joined Al Ain in 2011 on a significant salarythat was far more than he made during his year at Sunderland. The highly paid striker (£6m a year) was well worth his salary as Gyan led Al Ain to three UAE Pro League titles in four seasons. He also helped the club win the UAE President’s Cup. Gyan was a goal scoring machine during his time in the UAE and his 2013-14 season was the best of his four years in the Gulf. Gyan scored 44 goals in 40 matches in all competitions.

2006 World Cup

Gyan has scored 51 international goals, but according to the Ghanaian legend, no goal was bigger than his strike against the Czech Republic at the 2006 World Cup. It was the tournament’s fastest goal and helped spread Gyan’s name to fans and clubs around the world.

The controversial striker still has plenty of time left to bag more goals. Currently playing for Turkey’s Kayserispor, Gyan is never far from the goal or the news headlines.
