Football Fan Pleads for Ousted Ivorian Junta Leader Guei

A Ghanaian soccer fan says he is prepared to accommodate ousted Ivorian military ruler, Gen. Robert Guei.

Abraham Boakye, alias "One-man Supporter," an ardent fan of Ghana's Black Stars national team, said Saturday in Accra that he has been "moved by the spirit of God to accept the fugitive into my household."

Guei, who came to power in the coup of 24 December 1999, was deposed by an Ivorian mass uprising last week after he claimed victory in the controversial 22 October Presidential election.

Boakye, who is also the chairman of Akwatia Diamond Stars in the Eastern Region, said: "I have realised that General Guei has shown remorse and regret. This is evident by the fact that when his people rose against his rule, he accepted it in good faith and left (power)."

He said even though the General has committed a crime beyond human pardon and consequently denied refuge by many countries, Ghanaians should forgive him and grant him asylum.

"From the Scriptures, it is God who should punish him and not mortals like us," Boakye added.

The soccer fan has been travelling abroad with the Black Stars in their numerous encounters.
