Some football fans on social media, specifically X (formerly Twitter) have suggested that the BBC replace departing sports broadcaster Gary Lineker with Ghanaian comic actor and broadcaster Akwasi Boadi, known by his stage name, Akrobeto.

Football fans who follow the BBC's Match of the Day show jokingly mentioned that Akrobeto would be a good replacement for Lineker, who is set to step down from hosting the show at the end of the current football season after 25 years.

In reaction to the report, a video of Akrobeto presenting sports news on UTV was shared and has amassed over 2 million views with many English football fans affirming how hilarious and fun-filled the show would be with Akrobeto in charge.

The renowned comic actor humorously presents news on television on his show, The Real News, a feature of the show is the sports news presentation which has resulted in numerous viral clips of him hilariously butchering the names of football teams.

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, confirmed Gary Lineker's resignation, noting that the former footballer will host their 2026 FIFA World Cup coverage.

“Gary is a world-class presenter, and we’re delighted that he’ll lead our coverage of the next World Cup and continue to lead our live coverage of the FA Cup,” he said as quoted by UK outlet The Independent.

“After 25 seasons Gary is stepping down from MOTD. We want to thank him for everything he has done for the show, which continues to attract millions of viewers each week. He’ll be hugely missed on the show but we’re so happy he is staying with the BBC to present live football,” he added.
