President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to investing in sporting activities to help the nation reclaim its excellent reputation in competitions.

He indicated that his government will build the full complement of the Bukom Boxing Arena by adding gyms and other training facilities to aid the sports personnel.

He recalled how he used to stay awake at midnight to watch legendary boxer Azumah Nelson’s bouts in Australia, which brought joy to the citizenry.

During a boxing bout organized by Ultimate Legacy, owned by Sharaf Mahama, the president-elect stressed that he will give attention to lesser-known sports.

“Now we're going to build the full complement of this arena with the gyms and everything. So that we can bring boxing up as one of the best sports in Ghana. We all love football, but football is not the only game. It is not the only sport.

“When we were young, we used to stay up till 4:00 AM to watch Azumah Nelson fight in Australia. We're going to recapture those days here in the Bukom Boxing Arena, and it shouldn't only be boxing. It shouldn't only be football, it should be all the other sports. When we go for the Olympics and you see a country win 67 gold medals, it is not only football,” he said.

The Christmas edition of the Ultimate Legacy fight night saw Bukom Banku’s son, Abu Kamoko, alias Ambitious Tilapia, secure a fifth-round knockout victory over Daniel Bawa.

Olympic Games medalist Samuel Takyi also secured a third-round knockout over Odalai Lamptey in their lightweight contest.
