Former England captain boost for Ashgold

The massive organisational changes currently taking place at the Ghanaian football club Ashgold Sports Club, took a dramatic turn on Monday when former England and Liverpool captain, Phil Thompson, offered to place his technical, managerial and commercial networking to the benefit of the club.

The deal brokered by Ghanaian marketing giant, Proton Marketing and Management Services (PMM), will see representatives of the Obuasi club visit the United Kingdom next month at the invitation of the former England defender, who is currently a visiting fellow at the University of Liverpool Football Management School.

?I have offered my services to this Ghanaian club hoping that we can achieve the positive changes that befits the structures of the team,? Thompson told Ghanaweb.

Ashgold are expected to be represented by two top officials of the club with PMM?s CEO Mr Edwin Simeon-Okraku, and its director of Operations, Mr Lawrence Opare Otoo facilitating the meeting.

The CEO of PMM told Ghanaweb that this is one of the many opportunities that his outfit is placing for the benefit of Ghanaian football clubs.

?We welcome the challenge to put our knowledge, experience and contacts to the benefit of football clubs in Ghana,? said the Simeon-Okraku known in Ghanaian football circles as Kurt Odegbami.

While in England, officials of Ashgold, are scheduled to pay a working visit to European champions Liverpool Football Club, Manchester United?s Old Trafford ground and Bolton Wanderers Football club.

Also lined up for Ashgold football club, is a reciprocal relationship with a top French football club which is excepted to rake in material, financial and technical benefits to the one time powerful Ghanaian club.

Mr Kudjoe Fianoo, the acting CEO of Ashgold, was in full of praise for PMM, and hoped that this chance will mark the genesis of many good things to happen to his club as they seek to recapture lost ground.

Ashgold admitted that they will use the opportunity to network and interact with formidable business partners.

Phil Thompson who was capped 42 times by England played for Liverpool between 1972 and 1985 where he won seven league titles, the FA cup, two league cups, UEFA cup twice and the European Super Cup.

The lecturer at the University of Liverpool Football Management School made over 500 appearances for Liverpool FC where he served as the assistant and caretaker manager between 1998 and 2004.

He also works in the media as pundit for Sky Sports? football coverage.
