Former Nigerian footballer dies in a fatal accident

1993 FIFA U-17 World winner, Ibrahim Babangida, has died in a fatal accident that involved his brother Tijani Babangida as well as the brother's wife and his son.

According to former Nigerian footballer Emmanuel Babayaro, the accident occurred on Thursday, May 9, 2024, on the Kaduna-Zaria Road.

Babayaro confirmed that Tijani was on board, along with his wife, son, and maid, all of whom are in severe condition and have been hospitalised.

Ibrahim, who is a Muslim, is said to be buried today, Friday, May 10, 2024, in Kaduna.

The late Ibrahim, 47, spent a chunk of his football career in Nigeria playing for Bank of The North, Stationery Stores and Katsina United before securing a move to Dutch side Volendam in 1997.

Regarding his international career, his stint with U-17 and winning the World Cup in 1993 was his only highlight.

He could not break into the Super Eagles team despite his success at the youth level.
