The Deputy Sports Minister, Perry Okudzeto has opined that resuming the Ghana Premier League behind closed doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic is not a farfetched option
The league was suspended by the Ghana Football Association on March 16, in accordance with a government directive to impose a ban on public gatherings due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Despite Coronavirus not fully flushed out of the system and with uncertainty when this will happen, the world has been learning to live with the virus with many sectors resuming operations but with strict health measures in place.
In football, leagues around the world are working out how to resume playing with Germany already starting but without fans.
Talks about what happens to the future of the 2019-20 football season has dominated local media platforms with the GFA indicating they will decide finally to resume or cancel the season by June 30.
As pressure mounts on the country’s football governing body in this regard, options of playing behind closed doors have been mooted.
Appearing as a panel on Joy FM’s Behind the Lockdown program, Perry Okudzeto suggested that such an option is explorable.
He was however quick to note that such a decision hasn’t been taken.
“The option of playing in empty stadia is fine. When we get to that point and we think that it’s the best option for us in terms of making out game safe it will be one of the options we will consider. However, as we speak that decision has not been taken,” he said.
