Accra, April 7, GNA - Number two seed, Daniel Fumi lived up to pre- match billing when he braced into the semi final stage of the ongoing 12.1 million cedis Juvita Tennis Open Championship by defeating Clement Tackie in their quarter final tie played at the centre court of the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
Fumi who defeated Tackie 6-4, 6-3 in a game that lasted a little over an hour, set the stage for an uncompromising encounter between young and enterprising Michael Nortey in the next stage on Thursday. The all Osu boys affair, which was the day's top liner saw both players finding it extremely difficult holding on to their own serves which turned out to be their down side.
Fumi, however, rode on his ever-cheering fans and won most of the exchanges, delivering a combination of good volleys spiced with accurate strokes.
His rich returns emerged as his assert despite his poor services which saw him committing occasional unforced errors that was met with cheers. On Thursday, Fumi's ability will come under threat when he comes face to face with Nortey to determine who picks the final ticket to meet the winner of Patrick Nortey and Edward Quarcoo's tie.
Nortey who defeated pre-match favourite, Richard Tetteh with a cheeky 6-2, 6-4 result is poised to give Fumi the needed challenge in the game to be played at the centre court.
The major upset of the tournament so far emerged in the girls U-16 division where number one seed, Abigail Opoku-Mensah was beaten 2-4, 4-0 and 5-3 by Antoinette Cruckshank.
Cruckshank who lost the first set came in strongly in the second set subjecting the number one seed to commit various unforced errors where she managed to win on her opponents serves to the amazement of the crowd. 7 April, 04
