Accra, Jan. 8, GNA - The Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has announced a justify-your-inclusion exercise for the national team, Black Bombers ahead of major championships this term. The exercise billed for February is to select a formidable squad to form the component of the national amateur boxing team.
Solomon Ofei Darko, GABA Chairman told GNA Sports in Accra on Wednesday that the rational for the exercise was motivated by the Association's quest to reconstitute the Black Bombers team, which has been weakened by the departure of some of the members to the professional ranks.
"The team captain Bastie Samir has turned professional, others too are considering same and therefore the earlier we act, the better." Ofei Darko added that some talents have been discovered through some regional tournaments such as the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association's (GAABA) League among others, hence the need for all the boxers to join in the justifier to ensure a place in the national team.
The GABA Chairman explained that the exercise will see five boxers from each Region battling with their counterparts of the Bombers for the re-constitution of the team. Ofei Darko gave the assurance of fairness in the exercise adding that only the best from each weight category will be selected to form the nucleus of the national team. He described this term as a very busy one for the Association with the organisation of such competitions as the Zonal Championships and the Africa Championship amongst the topmost on the calendar.
The Chairman said it is in this regard that he announced that a comprehensive strategic policy has been put in place towards achieving the desired goals of uplifting Ghana's boxing image to the highest level.
