Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi has confirmed the association is looking for secure a new headline sponsor following the uncertainty surrounding their relationship with the Capital Bank.

The GFA appears to be gearing towards the termination of its five-year sponsorship contract worth $10m with Capital Bank (formerly First Capital Plus Bank).

The bank have asked for the suspension of the agreement over ongoing structural changes.

Capital Bank’s signing of the sponsorship agreement in 2014 was widely considered as a game changer for both the bank and the Premier League which had played the first round of the 2013/14 season without a sponsor.

This was after Nigerian-owned telecommunications firm Glo had terminated a similar agreement with the GFA.

The situation appears to be repeating itself and the Ghana FA is already looking for a replacement.

“We don’t have a sponsor now so we are looking for a new sponsor,” GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi confirmed.

“We hope to secure sponsorship by the time the league starts.”

Talks are reportedly already underway telecommunications giants MTN to become the new sponsor of the Premier League.

The challenge however is that MTN are currently the headline sponsors of the FA Cup competition and therefore it is unclear whether they will be willing to make another huge investment in the league.
