GFA ready to return $3.1m World Cup funds upon gov’t request – Nyantakyi

The Ghana FA will be ready to pay the remaining $3.1 million earned from the 2014 World Cup to the state coffers once government make a direct request for the funds.

It would be recalled that on November 6 this year, the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Brazil 2014 World Cup sent a letter to the Sports Ministry to inform the GFA to return the remaining $3.1 million to the consolidated fund after the nation’s football governing body refunded the loan of $4.2 million to government.

“We (the GFA) are only acting based on our initial agreement with government. If they wanted to change the agreement, they should tell us and explain the new position to us. If government tells us to bring the $3.1 million, I will return it just as we did in 2010,” Nyantakyi told Asempa 94.7FM.

Government pre-financed the payment of the Black Stars appearance fees during the 2014 World Cup after borrowing monies to the tune of $4.2 million from the Bank of Ghana.
