GFA sympathises with Premier League Clubs for enduring hardship

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), has expressed sympathy towards Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs, for enduring “trying conditions” in the top flight division without a title sponsor.

The GPL, has been without title sponsors in the last three seasons, a situation the GFA has described as “unfortunate”.

Speaking at the launch of the 2017/18 GPL season on behalf of the GFA president, Mr. Kwaku Eyiah, an Executive Committee member, noted that, the GFA was aware of the financial distress on the 16 clubs in the absence of a title sponsor.

He said the GFA appreciated all efforts by the respective clubs, to have managed and sustained themselves in the midst of all the challenges.

“Unfortunately this is the third successive season we are starting the league without a headline sponsor. For both the GFA and participating clubs, it has not been easy. The rising cost of running these clubs coupled with diminishing revenue has ensured that both the GFA and the clubs have had to operate on a very tight budget to sustain the league in very trying conditions.

“The GFA is particularly impressed by the unflinching commitment of club owners to keep their clubs afloat and the Premier League Board running in spite of the difficult financial situations we find ourselves,” Mr Eyiah noted.

“Interestingly the most difficult period of the GPL has come at a time, when the league has remarkably been exciting and highly competitive. We cannot say for sure as to who will even win the league this time around. We’ve had three different champions emerging within the period,” he noted.
