The Communications Director of the GFA has said that the 2019/2020 league season will be cancelled if and only when ‘it becomes virtually impossible to kick the round leather’.

The season has been on break since March 15 following the ban on all forms of social gathering.

The FA, has held deliberations with the government over a possible return to the field.

It was expected that football was going to be given an exemption in President Akufo-Addo’s last address on the virus but it turned out to be a disappointment for the FA as only non-contact sports activities were given clearance.

Some football administrators have since then appealed to the FA to terminate the season and start a new season when it becomes conducive for football to be played.

But in an interaction with www.ghanaweb.com, Henry Asante Twum assured that all measured required for football to be played in this period have been taken with only government’s approval being the holdback.

He maintained that the FA is not averse to the idea of cancelling the season but a decision of such nature demands extensive consultations among the various stakeholders.

“You started a new season, halfway through a pandemic strikes and you were left with no option but to hold on. So if you were to call off the season, when will it be convenient to continue a new season? That will be another issue. It’s not as though the FA is bent on continuing the season but it is not just a one-man decision and stakeholders include our partners, sponsors and ultimately the clubs.

“The Executive Council has the powers to either truncate, cancel or at the moment suspend the season. Three weeks ago when they met, they decided to hold on so we issued a statement that the suspension was still on and we will continue our engagement with the government until such a time when we all know it will be virtually impossible to kick the round leather”, he said.
