GTDC holds 1st ‘Centre of the World’ golf tourney at Tema

Over Hundred golfers participated in the first edition of 'Center of the World' Golf tournament which was held on Saturday to create awareness about the historical center of the world landmark which passes through the Tema Golf Course, Accra.

Joseph Koblah (36) topped the chart to lift the trophy in the Men’s Group A (20 hole) after seeing off Teye Lartey, Kwabena Boakye and Alex Firgome respectively. In the Men’s Group (15 hole) Felix Akwamoah beat Appiah Korang and Ayanful Ebenezer to win his category.

Etwi Barimah was crowned the biggest winner in the women's elite division (Group A) ahead of Mona Mylers Lamptey and Grace Afriyie who finished in second and third respectively. The women's lower division (Group B) competition, was won by Anyanful Angela as Helena Appiah came third with Diana Baiden picking the third position.

The golfers who made the shortlist were presented with an award as well as cash prize and souvenirs from GTDC and the sponsors UMB.

Although the interjectional point of Longitude and Latitude 0° is located in the Atlantic Ocean, the nearest habitat place for mankind is located in Ghana. The Greenwich meridian line passes through the Tema Golf course, Tema Post and the Greenwich Presbyterian Church at Community one.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the tournament, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Kwadwo Odame Antwi said that plans were far advanced to make the Tema Golf Course a first-class modern resort in Africa which will be renamed as ‘Centre of the World Golf Club’.



“We have progressed with the discussions even further as was led by Hon. Felix Agyapong that we will be developing with our partners the Tema Golf Course into a first-class modern resort.”

He continued that, “We will be developing the Tema Country Golf Club into a first-class resort, we are working under the management of the current executive and the board of trustees and the direct permission of Mr. Adjetey, the architect we’ve met already and with the support of our developers to see the design we can come out with. We will have a first class hotel, a sports enclave, shopping mall, casino, theater at the modern golf resort.”

Stephen Oduro of State Insurance Company commended the upcoming project and directed Ghana can earn high revenue if we seriously decide to invest in tourism and sports.
