Ghana Wheelchair Tennis (GWT) under the auspices of the Ghana Tennis Federation and International Tennis Federation (ITF)successfully launched Wheelchair Tennis Team in Takoradi at the GHACEM Tennis Club House over the weekend.

Twenty disabled players went through training under the Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund Programs on Friday and Sunday at the GHACEM Tennis Court.

Participants were taken through the various techniques of playing tennis. There was time for them to practice what they had been taught, with many of the participants already showing prospects of becoming great wheelchair tennis players.

The launch of the program which was under the theme ‘Achieving Sustainable Development Goals for Persons with Disability through Wheelchair Tennis’ is targeted at identifying potential national players, according to the National Coordinator of GWT, Henry Larbi

“We are trying to introduce wheelchair tennis to persons with disability all over Ghana. We are already in 8 regions and it is left with Western and Central Regions. We decided to come to Western this time to introduce the game to them and also to train the beginners so that we can identify potential players who we can probably pay more attention to and develop them to be national players.”

The GWT with support from their mother body, the GTF, ITF and GHACEM Tennis Club presented Rackets and lunch to all the participants at the end of the two-day program.

Francis Kofi Asare who doubles as Regional Chairman of Wheelchair Basketball will go through intensive training in Accra by Coaches, so as to be equipped to train his members, in collaboration with the GHACEM Tennis Club.

The GWT have promised to visit the new Association in Takoradi again to check up on the teams development.
