Garrison Inter-Districts schools Games open

Accra, Feb. 8, GNA - Children have been urged to take active part in sports to enhance their health.

Nii Lante Cleleand, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, was speaking at the opening of this year's "Five Garrison Education Unit" of the Ghana Armed Forces Inter-District/Sub-Metro Basic Schools Sports Competition at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Wednesday. Ada, Dodowa, Amasaman, Abokobi, Tema District, Ashiedu Keteke, OkaiKoi and Ayawaso Sub-Metro teams are taking part in the two-day games of Soccer and Netball.

It is to unearth talents and to select players for this year's National Milo Sports Championship scheduled for Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

Nii Cleland said sports and physical activities play a very important role in the socio-economic development of every nation "and this spirit must be inculcated in our children very early." He said, "as children, you need to know that physical activities and sports are good ingredients that would sustain you physically, socially as well as mentally."

The Deputy Regional Director of Education charged the participants to abide by the rules governing the games so that an unblemished champion would emerge.

Major Robert Adwini, Chief Garrison Education Officer, said the Regional Education Office was much concerned with academic excellence to meet the expectations of parents.

In the opening Under-12 soccer match, Tema defeated Ashiedu Keteke 3-2 on penalties to advance to the next stage of the competition. 08 Feb. 06
