George Ashie to face tough South African opponent for WBO title

George ‘Red Tiger’ Ashie will return to the ring on April 27 at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Ashie will battle South Africa’s Michael Mokoena for the vacant interim WBO lightweight belt. The card is been promoted by Box Office Promotions.

The Ghanaian after turning pro 15 years ago was tipped for greatness but his career nearly took a nose dive after his controversial majority lost to compatriot Emmanuel Tagoe in 2012.

The Bukom native has found his rhythm and he is ready to roar against the South African.

“My aim is to become a world champion,” Ashie said during Tuesday’s press conference at The Gym in Accra. “I’m starting the journey with the WBO Africa lightweight belt, and I’m sure I will achieve that feat.”

“Box Office CEO Alex Ntiamoah promised to reshaped my career and I thank him for that. On April 27th Michael Mokoena will go down. The title is staying here in Ghana.”

CEO of Box Office Promotions Alex Ntiamoah ahead of the fight said, “My aim is to produce a world champion, George Ashie is a good fighter and I know what he can do.”

“Ashie will be relaunching his career on April 27th and I’m calling on all boxing loving fans to fill the Bukom Boxing Arena on the said date.”

For the undercard bouts, Isaac Sackey will take on Raymond Commey for the vacant WBO Africa super bantamweight belt.

Ayitey Powers will battle Enoch Quaye in a cruiserweight contest. Obodai Sai will face yet to be named opponent.

Prince Octopus Dzanie will also face being announced, opponent.
