Ghana AAG participation in limbo

Politics and financial problems are threatening to derail Ghana's plan to make the next All Africa Games.

The men's and women's Olympic football teams of the country are on the cusp of the Games to be staged in Congo Brazzaville.

But there have been problems as the country's National Sports Authority has been beset with cash issues.

The latest twist is that the Ghana Olympic Committee’s General Secretary, Richmond Quarcoo, has expressed support of the threat issued by the chairmen of the various sporting federations to boycott the Games.

The chairmen of the 38 sporting federations that have qualified to compete in the Games in September have resolved to pull their teams out of the competition over lacking funds from the Sports Ministry.

The Sports Ministry was handed a Friday deadline. “There is no point going to the games if we haven’t prepared,” Richard Quarcoo said.

“Don’t forget that the countries that we will be competing against have prepared and for us three months to the competition we have not prepared.

“There is therefore no need for us to go to the competition to cause financial loss to the state.”

A non-participation will mean that Ghana will, for the first time in over 50 years, not be present at the prestigious event.
