Ghana Athletics Association to review Martha Bissah’s suspension

Former Executive Board Member of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Erasmus Kwaw has hinted that the top hierarchy of his outfit will in the coming weeks sit to among other things deliberate on the indefinite suspension hanging over junior Olympic champion Martha Bissah.

If everything goes well, the GAA will finally lift the ban and permit the youngster to compete for Ghana in international events as long as she meets the qualification times.

For the last four years, Martha has been frozen out of national assignments, mainly because she has struggled to make the qualification times and partly because of her suspension.

Bissah, who is now based in the USA, cannot represent Ghana at any event as she is serving an indefinite suspension after failing to substantiate bribery allegations levelled against executives last year and there are fears the budding talent will be lured to switch her nationality.

But speaking on Accra based Asempa FM last Friday, Erasmus Kwaw said “The GAA Congress deferred a decision on the Martha Bissah ban and the fate of those who sent the GAA to court to the Executive Board. The Executive Board is set to have its first meeting this month (September). A decision will most likely taken at that meeting”

Earlier this year, Martha Bissah, admonished the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, to back his words with action and get the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) to lift the ban placed on her.

According to her, that was the only way authorities could show that they were interested in her competing for Ghana.

"I am waiting for the minister to lift the ban placed on me by the GAA. That is what he said when he was appointed, so I can only wait before I make any decisions on my relationship with the national team," the 21-year-old 800 metres junior Olympics champion told the media from her US base.
