Ghana Cycling Association honours Zomelo for exploits

Accra, Oct. 14, GNA – The Ghana Cycling Association (GCA) has conferred honours on John Zomelo a local cyclist for his excellent and brave exploits at the “Impossible Tour Du Burkina Faso” held in June this year.

Zomelo, the pedal maestro was presented with a cup, T-shirt and cash for defying all odds to pick the fifth position out of 20 cyclists from various countries who participated in the event in Burkina Faso.


The newly instituted “Impossible Tour Du Burkina Faso”, saw the Ghanaian cyclist clear a non-stop distance of 500 kilometers, from Bangura to Ouagadougou.


Mr Shaaban Mohammed, Technical Director of the GCA at a short presentation ceremony in Accra on Thursday, said the feat deserves commendation from the officials hence the decision to confer honours on the veteran cyclist.


He commended the volunteer cyclist who entered the competition without any form of sponsorship and was seen as a stranger in the race for his exploits which earned Ghana applauds among an enthusiastic Burkina fans.

Dennis Moore, Director of Communications of the GCA who accompanied the cyclists to the competition also praised the Ghanaian team, especially Zomelo for his brave effort for chalking such a success.


He said the Cycling Association are putting in place plans to incorporate the marathon 500 kilometers event into the Ghanaian cycling race to offer more avenues for local cyclists to improve on their fitness and performance.


Meanwhile the GCA is expected to participate in another event dubbed, “ECOWAS Tour” in November with the starting point from Nigeria through Benin, Togo, Ghana and then Cote d’Ivoire as the finishing point.
