Accra, Aug. 9, GNA - The international friendly match between Ghana's Black Stars and the Super Eagles of Nigeria has been called off. Information pieced together by the GNA Sports indicates that the game was called off based on the advice of the Watford Police. The game was billed for Tuesday night at Watford's Vicarage Road, Hertfordshire Constabulary.
The decision to call off the match was influenced by days of rioting across London and other cities, which is said to have outstretched the limit of the Police.
Organizers of the event, according to sources close to the Ghana Football Association, (GFA) confirmed the decision to call off the match to both teams.
Randy Abbey, Executive Member of the GFA said, "We have just been informed by the match organisers about the latest decision to call off today's friendly with Nigeria at Watford."
Colin Udoh, Media Officer for the Super Eagles told GNA Sports that "Officials have spent the last hour plus in a desperate bid to salvage the game. But the final word from Watford FC is; no Police assurance, no game'. Ghana thumped Nigeria 4-1 the last time the two teams met in an international friendly at Brentford, in 2007.
