The Senior National 7s Rugby Team, The Black Eagles put up a spectacular show at the just ended Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Rugby 7s competition in Lome, Togo.

The team departed Accra for Togo at about 1:00pm on Thursday 28th June 2012 and arrived at about 7:00pm at the Sege Sports Stadium in Lome, where all participating teams were camped for the tournament.

Ghana played her first match against the host nation on the morning of Friday 29th June, followed by two matches on the same day. The match against Togo ended 5 – 0 in favour of the Black Eagles, the second match which was against Togo’s second team which replaced Algeria ended 10 – 0 in favour of Ghana. Even though the Eagles scored first, they unfortunately lost to Niger in their final group game and thus finished second in Group B, which featured Togo A, Togo B Niger and Ghana.

The performance qualified the Eagles to play Burkina Faso, who placed first in Group, A which included the likes of Egypt, Benin, Mali and Burkina Faso, in the semi final game.

The Eagles triumphed over their Burkinabe counterparts by 10 points to 0 to qualify the eagles to the grand finale to be played against Niger who drew 0 – 0 against Mali in their semi final match but qualified on superior point accumulation.

After the lower ranked matches to determine positioning were played, the final match between Ghana and Niger soon took off at about 4:00pm on Saturday. The Black Eagles after a spectacular performance to the amazement of all found themselves trailing 12 – 0 after an illegal try was allowed. The Eagles managed to pull 5 points back in the second half; this was however not enough to win them the match, as it ended 12 – 5 in favour of Niger.

The Black Eagles were with these results crowned 2nd place in the overall rankings of the tournament.

It is in order to say AYEKOO to our gallant men who fought to make Ghana rugby proud, and to the coach and technical team for putting such a formidable team together.
