Ghana Premier League is weak - E.T Mensah

Former Youth and Sports Minister, Hon. Enoch Teye Mensah believes that the non-competitiveness of the Ghana League has contributed to the fewer number of local players making it into the senior national team, the Black Stars.

The Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament’s latest comment is in sharp contrast with the view of the Ghana FA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, who believes the domestic top flight is the most competitive league on the continent.

“When your big clubs are struggling, you don’t have a solid local Black Stars (players). We are struggling because our league is weak. Who goes to watch football now? Those days, they were playing English league all right, but our stadia was always full because the boys were playing very well,” the long-serving MP told Power FM.

There have been calls from local football enthusiasts for the inclusion of some local players into the Black Stars ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with names such as Stephen Adams, Abeiku Ainooson, Nuru Sulley and Kwabena Adusei who put up an impressive showing in this year’s CHAN tournament in South Africa, on the lips of many.

Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah is expected to name a 30-man provisional squad for the World Cup in about ten days.
