Ghana Qualifies For Africa Games Baseball

Ghana will present two teams in Baseball at the All Africa Games in Abuja later this year. The male and female teams known as the Rising Stars qualified from the zone three elimination series, which Ghana hosted over the weekend.

Even though the male team lost to Nigeria victories over Togo and La Cote D?ivoire sealed qualification for the team because the Nigerians as hosts of the competition qualify automatically.

The Chief Patron of the Ghana Baseball Association Paa Kwesi Yankey told Joy News that the team would begin preparing immediately for the All Africa Games so as to make an impact on the competition.

Paa Kwesi Yankey believes that if the Rising Stars do well at the All Africa Games it will do wonders for the sport, which enjoys little patronage in Ghana. ?Once we enter the medal zone in Abuja, a lot of interest will be stirred up in the sport.

An example is Kenya where very few people play Cricket but the moment their national team got into the semi-finals of the cricket world cup, the euphoria generated by sport infected a lot of people. We want to promote baseball with a performance driven approach. If we perform people will be enthused.?

The Baseball chief Patron claims the sport is making gains on the quiet but reckons a lot of work has to be done to make it one of the major sports in the country.

That includes heavily popularising the game through the media. ?We have a lot of young talent who were trained in America and Cuba plus the Japanese community here. So once people get to know where the game is being played they will patronise it. But we have a lot of work to do?.
