Ghana last Saturday defeated Tunisia in this year’s Afro Basket under 18 continental tournaments currently on-going in faraway Maputo, Mozambique.

The national Under 18 basketball team defeated Tunisia in their first game of the tournament by 47 to 45 baskets on Saturday morning thereby setting the stage for a hopefully successful tournament.

The Under 18 basketball team are playing in the tournament after they have been drawn as the wild card following their silver winning feat in Abidjan in July this year.

As is the case of the other sporting disciplines in the country, the team left Ghana on the day the tournament started thereby getting to Maputo very late, after the day one matches had been played.

A volunteer with the Ghana Basketball Association, Dr Robert Kumoji has praised the boys for winning under such extremely difficult circumstances. “I am happy for the boys; it is not an easy achievement because Tunisia are not pushovers” he said.

Day one of the men’s competition saw the host nation, Mozambique being defeated by Rwanda 62-34 baskets while Senegal defeated a tenacious Gabonese side by 73-69. In the other game of day one, Zone 3 champions, Cote D’Ivoire beat Angola by 60-51.

Ghana falls under zone three of Afrobasketball alongside Cote D’Ivoire, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Togo, Nigeria and Niger.
