Ghana edge Nigeria to win five-goal thriller

Ghana's U-20 team put on a show to edge rivals, Nigeria 3-2 in their opening Group A match at the 8-Nation International tournament in South Africa.

The Black Satellites now need a win from their next match to the semi-finals.

Goals from Baba Abdul Rahman, Frank Sarfo Gyamfi and Benjamin Fadi helped the Black Satellites secure victory on Friday at the Athlone Stadium.

Ghana are second on the standings though level on points with Argentina, three apiece after the South American nation beat South Africa 3-1 in the other group match.

The Flying Eagles, against the run of play took the lead through Uche Agbo, who headed home after 47 minutes.

However, Ghana drew level almost immediately when left-back Baba Rahman scored with a shot from outside the box.

Nigeria jumped into the lead again when Aminu Umar bundled the ball into the empty goal after a scramble in the Ghana box in the 61st minute.

It took Black Satellites 19 minutes after falling back to draw level. Sarfo Gyamfi smashed home from a free kick that sailed beyond goalkeeper Samuel Okani.

And with four minutes remaining, substitute Fadi, was on hand to tap-in the match winner.

The win will boost coach Orlando Wellington's side ahead of their meeting against the hosts, Amajita at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday before finishing up the group campaign against Argentina.

According to the tournament rules, the top two teams in each group, qualify for the last four stage.
