The Goal Ghana poll this week focused on the future of Andre Ayew—one of the most intriguing stories in the national football narrative today—with the vast majority of readers believing Liverpool would be a good fit for the forward.
In light of the recent transfer speculation linking the Olympique de Marseille man with a move to Anfield, and the player’s comments concerning the club, we asked whether Brendan Rodgers’s Reds would suit the Black Star.
Many of you cast your votes, and an overwhelming majority of 79.2 percent believe that Liverpool would be a good destination for Ayew.
Last week, the 18-time English league champions emerged among the favourites for the out-of-contract superstar, when he admitted both that he would be keen on a move to England and that he supported Liverpool.
“I grew up watching English football and I support Liverpool,” the Ghanaian began, speaking to Sportsmail.
“Steven Gerrard is my favourite player. They have always had exciting teams and now they are a club that likes to play with pace and give chances to young players.”
One issue with any potential move to Liverpool would surely come in the form of Ayew’s desire to play in the Champions League.
The Reds, who sit fifth in the Premier League table at the time of writing, are unlikely to return to the continental high table next season, a fact which may test Ayew’s self-declared affection for the club.
There has been extensive reported interest in the player from the Premier League, with Liverpool joined by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Newcastle United, Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers as rumoured destinations for the player.
However, since our poll was instigated, AS Roma have perhaps overtaken Liverpool as the bookies’ favourite to be Ayew’s next club.
The Italian giants have met with the player’s officials and offered Ayew a three-year contract worth €300,000 per month, dependent on the Giallorossi qualifying for the Champions League next season.
Spartak Moscow are also believed to have offered the player a deal, but while it is reportedly more lucrative than the Serie A side’s, Ayew is apparently not keen on a move to Russia.
Roma may face domestic competition from the likes of Inter Milan, AC Milan and Napoli, while German sides Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and, notably, Bayer Leverkusen, have also been linked with the player.
