Getafe are reluctant

The Ghana Football Association has written to Spanish side Getafe to request the release of midfielder Dereck Boateng for the African Cup of Nations. The midfielder has been given a late call-up in the wake of serious injuries to several members of the 23-man squad called for the tournament in Angola.

According to Ghanasoccernet sources in Spain, Getafe are reluctant to release the player on the grounds that it violates Fifa laws on the invitation of players for major competitions.

Fifa laws require clubs to be informed of the invitation of their players for major tournaments two weeks ahead of the competition.

This means Ghana will be unable to use the player if Getafe insist that they will not release the player for the tournament.

The Ghana FA is likely to turn to Udinese bound defender Jonathan Mensah if the pursuit of Boateng fails.

Ghana has a very good relationship with Udinese and even though the invitation falls outside the 14-day rule he is likely to be released for the tournament.

There are several other players at home and abroad who could be considered if the quest for Mensah also fails.

The Black Stars have been ravaged by injuries as key players Stephen Appiah and Laryea Kingston have already been ruled out of the tournament.

Deputy captain John Mensah and John Paintsil are also doubts for the tournament because of injuries they suffered in England.

The availability of Michael Essien is also in doubt which has considerably weakened the Black Stars.
