‘Ghana has lost a great hero’: Oti Akenteng pays tribute to the late Opoku Afriyie

Technical Director of the Ghana Football Association, Francis Oti Akenteng has paid a glowing tribute to the late Ghanaian footballer Opoku Afriyie.

Opoku Afriyie passed away on Sunday March 29, 2020 in Kumasi at the age of 75.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak striker was an instrumental figure as Ghana won the 1978 AFCON.

He also served as a team manager cum welfare officer for the senior national team during the early 2000’s.

Oti Akenteng in an interview with Kumasi based Foxx FM shared his personal experiences with the departed Ghanaian legend and described his passing as a great loss.

“The late Opoku Afriyie was a unifier. I had problems with Samuel Osei Kufuor at the African Cup of Nations in 2002(Mali) and were not in talking terms. He called me and Kufuor and settled issues between us”.

“He bought a car for the late Uncle Ben Kouffie. On the field he cannot be compared. Indeed Ghana football has lost a great footballer” he concluded
