Ghana in group A of WAFU Cup Competition

Accra, Oct. 18, – Ghana has been paired in Group A alongside Sierra Leone, Benin and Burkina Faso, in the 2013 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup competition to be hosted by Ghana.

Ghana will play the opening match against Sierra Leone at the Accra Sports Stadium, on Thursday, November 21.


The competition dubbed “Go TV WAFU Cup Competition”, fixed for November 21-28 at the Accra Sports Stadium will be sponsored by Multi Choice Ghana Limited with its subsidiary station Go TV as the head line sponsors, with support from Coca Cola Company Limited, Midwest Ghana Limited, Alisa Hotel and Kenpong Travel and Tours.


In a draw conducted by the Akan Mallan General Secretary of WAFU on Thursday, October 18, during the launching of the 2013 WAFU Cup Competing, defending champions Togo have been paired with Niger, Senegal and Gabon in Group B, to complete pairings for the eight nation competition.


According to Mallan, winners of each group will advance automatically to the finals of the competition, with the second placed teams from each group vying for the third and fourth place.

Kwesi Nyantakyi president of WAFU and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) who launched the competition, said the revival of the event was a great moment for the sub- region and the continent as a whole.


He said the competition will provide participants with a competitive opportunity to test their strengths before the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in South Africa early next year.


Nyantakyi said the return of the competition onto the football calendar will also strengthen the position of the sub region as a powerhouse in football on the continent adding that countries from West Africa stand a great chance of picking majority of the continental slots for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He said the WAFU Cup Competition will also provide the sub region with the opportunity to unite for socio-economic development.
