The Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) is preparing for the 1st Ghana Open International Taekwondo Championship at the Accra Sports Stadium on 18th and 19th August 2017.

The event comes off at The DG Hathiramani. Rlg Sports Hall which is undergoing refurbishment.

President off the GTF Mr. Fred Lartey Otu said the National Sports Authority NSA is supporting with the renovation of the sports hall with new fittings and painting. The electrical wiring are being fixed, with new air conditioners to make the players, officials and spectators feel comfortable.

He explained that it is an advantage for Taekwondo players in Ghana to come and display their skill, strength and talent in Martial Arts and may get the opportunity to represent the nation on the world scene.

Mr Stephen Kofi Yeboah, Coach of the National Taekwondo team said the championship, which commences in a few days is geared towards preparing the Ghana national team and to improve upon their rankings by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) for next year’s All African Games.

Mr Yeboah expressed his excitement of Ghana hosting the Championship since it would urge them to perform well in front of Ghanaians as well as enjoy home support.

According to him, since the championship is an open competition, where other athletes can be signed up, his target as a Coach is to look out for good performers, who can represent the country at the All African Games.

“This is a G1 tournament, which gives you some points when it comes to seeding. So as a coach I am very happy we are hosting the championship.

“If they are able to build up points for their rankings, it would be easier to select them for the All African Games because they wouldn’t have to start from the scratch”.

The Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) got the nod to host the championship earlier this year by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

The 2017 World Taekwondo Open Championship would serve as preparation for the upcoming 2019 All African Games.
