Ghana’s national arm-wrestling team, the Golden Arms, will be heading to Mali today, Thursday, 30 May 2019, to defend their Africa Arm-wrestling & Para Arm-wrestling Championship crown.
Ghana hosted and won the 2018 edition of the competition with 31 gold, 32 silver and 25 bronze medals with a grand total of 88 medals.
President of the Ghana Arm-wrestling Federation, Mr Charles Osei Assibey said he is hoping to defend the crown by winning, at least, 60 medals at this year’s edition.
“The strategy is that the least we will do this year should be nothing less than 60 [medals]. In fact, we plan to win about 80 [medals] to be able to defend the title successfully,” he stated in an interview with Class Sports on Tuesday, 28 May 2019.
He was quick to add that their objective will be successful if they receive enough funding.
“But it is all dependent on how much we will be able to raise to travel to Bamako. If we are able to go with numbers, I am sure we should be able to defend the title successfully,” Mr Assibey added.
He was, however, confident of raising the funds for the event, stating that the brand’s image will bring them the needed support from corporate institutions.
The 2019 Africa Arm-wrestling & Para Arm-wrestling Championship is to take place from 30 May to 2 June 2019 in Bamako, Mali.
