Defending champions Cameroon began their African Nations Cup campaign with a victory, but fancied South Africa were surprisingly held to a draw in matches in Mali on Sunday.
Cameroon did little more than was needed in beating the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in a Group C match in Sikasso.
Reigning African Footballer of the Year Patrick Mboma scored the only goal of the match six minutes from the break when he beat Congolese goalkeeper Paulin Tokala with a long-range shot.
In the capital Bamako, World Cup finalists Senegal got their African Nations Cup campaign off to a winning start when they beat Egypt 1-0 in a Group D match.
The goal came from a corner eight minutes from time.
Egyptian goalkeeper El Hadary punched the ball straight to French-based defender Lamine Diatta, who headed over the goalkeeper and past three Egyptian defenders standing on the line.
Group D has been named the Group of Death, as it includes two World Cup finalists in Senegal and Tunisia as well as African footballing giants Egypt and Zambia.
In Segou, Burkina Faso surprisingly held South African to a goalless draw in a Group B match.
Burkina Faso, who dismissed Argentine coach Oscar Fullone a week before the tournament started and appointed Jacques Yameogo, were not overwhelmed by the occasion, even though they started the match in Segou as underdogs, and were full value for their point.
