Ghana’s men, women qualify for AAG finals

Before today, Ghana’s whole contingent at the ongoing All Africa Games had won only two medals.

The country’s football teams have made sure that will change by Saturday, as the male and female teams both qualified for the finals of their respective disciplines.

The female team, the Black Princesses, beat Algeria 3-0 early Wednesday to secure a finale with Cameroon on Saturday. A brace from Elizabeth Cudjoe and another stunner from captain Mercy Myles, all before the end of the first half, gave the team a comfortable win. Both Ghana and Cameroon are unbeaten in the competition.

Cameroon’s male team also suffered a 1-0 loss to Ghana’s Black Meteors, with Prince Baffoe’s goal after 56 minutes the difference. The final on Saturday sees Ghana play South Africa to decide the goal medal winner.

Ghana’s male team had been beset with problems even before the games started, and their mental toughness is being hailed in the local media. Also given special mention is coach Kwasi Appiah, who doubles as assistant coach of the senior team, the Black Stars.
