Ghana targets Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020

Ghana’s search for an Olympic Gold Medal is a serious issue for the current Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) headed by Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah.

In this vein, he has appointed Chef du Missions for all upcoming international competitions and the visionary leader in charge of the next Olympic Games scheduled for 2020 in Japan has though it wise and prudent to have a working committee to plan and strategize for Team Ghana to pick at least one gold medal.

Mr. Paul Atchoe, the GOC First Vice President who doubles as President of the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) and Chef du Mission for Tokyo 2020 and his working committee wish to invite the sports media in Ghana to a soiree for a media launch on Tokyo 2020.

The event comes off at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) on Friday, March 2, 2018, and he will address the reasons for Ghana’s lack for winning at the big stage and what must be done.

Paul Atchoe who briefed Yours Truly on the event said Team Ghana must prepare on time for these world competitions, and the nation must be focused and determined to achieve that is why he wants to bring on board corporate Ghana to support the sportsmen and women, since experiences over the years has shown that funding has always been a major issue.

According to Paul Atchoe, Ghana has many talented sports people and the nation must try to present as many people who have the potential and are medal prospects.

He also noted that the Media has a very big role to play in advertising and motivating the sports personalities, so they are being invited to send the message that Team Ghana is getting ready for 2020, and they are going to use the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia as a launch pad or spring board for greater and bigger things.

“We have to prepare well, before we can perform at the highest level and climb the podium for a medal” he said.

The sports enthusiast said Ghana has only won one gold at the Youth Olympics by Martha Bissah, and at the bigger Olympic Games, the nation boasts of only four medals which are one silver won by Ike Quartey Snr. in boxing at the 1960 Games in Rome and three bronze medals by Eddie Blay Snr at Tokyo 1964, Prince Amartey at Munich in 1972 and the Black Meteors for football in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain.

According to the optimistic Vice President of the GOC, Ghana is capable of winning more medals if the athletes are given attention.

He added that sports is a vehicle for publicity and marketing so companies should involve themselves in sporting activities to enhance their businesses and support to create a nation of healthy people.
