Accra, July 22, GNA - Ghana, will host three other African countries in a Confederation of Africa (CAR) Under-18 Rugby Tournament at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium from Thursday, July 28, through to Saturday, July 30.

The three other participating countries are Togo, Nigeria and Cameroon.

Ghana play Cameroon in the opening match of the tournament on Thursday while Togo battle Nigeria in the second match of the day. Briefing the press in Accra on Friday, Mrs Gifty Annan-Myers Chairperson of the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) said, the winners of the first day matches would engage each other in the finals while the losers would battle for the third and four positions on Saturday, July 30.

Mrs Annan-Myers said Ghana was given the right to host the event due to her significant contribution towards the development of the sport. She said the International Rugby Board (IRB) and CAR hold the local association in high esteem hence the endorsement for the nation to organise the tournament.

"This is as a result of the fast pace at which the sport has developed in the country within the two years of its introduction," she said.

Mrs Annan-Myers said the association would soon begin an outreach programme aim at giving the sport a national character and to attract more people.

Both players and officials of the Ghanaian team have been given insurance cover by Star Assurance Company Limited. Akosombo Textile Limited (ATL), SG SSB, Yes Mineral Water, Tropic Oil Ghana Limited, Holiday hotel and Experience Student Travel are all contributing towards the organisation and hosting the event.
