Ghana is set to host an international athletics meet in August where some of the nation’s best talents will pitch their strength against those from other countries.
The event is scheduled to come off at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and it will be the first time that an event of such magnitude would take place in Ghana.
General Secretary of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Fuseini Bawa, is hopeful that the meet will come off successfully as Ghana seeks to bring its sport to international standards.
“If everything goes according to plan, then this would be the springboard for the nation to host many more international events”, he said.
Mr. Bawa said in an interview that this move forms part of the vision of the GAA to bring athletics to the door steps of the people and at the same time help develop talents.
Ghana he added, would select the best possible talent available (local and foreign) to compete with those coming from outside and believes the competition would toughen them up for future events.
That would include the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea from August 27 to September 4 where Ghana hopes to improve on her performance of two years ago.
The August international in Kumasi, would be preceded by the National Sports festival in July where athletes would seek to improve on their performance to gain selection for the meet.
