Ghana to host five others in a Rugby championship

Accra, June 16, GNA - Ghana will host five other countries in the next edition of the Confederation of Africa Rugby Championship dubbed "Super 16".

The championship fixed between 22-29 June would take place at the Athletic Oval of the University of Ghana, Legon with Togo, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad competing for honours.


The championship is a partnership between the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) and the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR). Gifty Annan-Myers, Chairperson of GRA said at a press conference in Accra on Monday, that the championship has received great support from the continental body and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports. She said the championship, which is the first to be hosted by an English speaking African country will provide the appropriate platform for the development of the sport in the country, adding that it would also increase patronage of the sport in Ghana. Annan-Myers noted that the championship will also provide an international exposure to members of the national team for future international assignments.

She said Ghana's team has had the best of preparations for the tournament and they are confident of winning the competition. Ntiense Williams, newly appointed coach of Ghana's national rugby team said his boys are in the best of shapes for the championship. The Coach said that the players have over the past weeks demonstrated high standards at training and he expects them to overcome every opposition at the championship. 16 June 08
