Ghana to participate in five disciplines at the next Cwealth Games

Accra, Oct. 27, GNA - Ghana will participate in five disciplines at the 18th Commonwealth Games scheduled for Melbourne, Australia in March 2006.

The disciplines are Athletics, Badminton, Table Tennis, Boxing and Weightlifting.

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) in conjunction with the National Sports Council (NSC) announced this at a Press Briefing in Accra on Thursday.

Mr Albert Tettey, Secretary General of the GOC said the selection was based on the information provided by the NSC on the performance of the disciplines.

He said the GOC would embark on further screening of the number of sports men and women from the various disciplines so as to present the best at the event, which spans from March 15-28 next year. Mr Tettey said what is left for the Committee is to source for sponsorship from the corporate bodies to support the budgetary allocation to be made by the government for the participation of the nation at the event.

Mr Charles James Aryeh, Acting Chief Executive of the NSC outlined the criteria for the selection as performance and rankings of the various disciplines at the international level. He, however, noted that two of the disciplines namely Table Tennis and Badminton will go under further screening before the games.
