Ghana wins seven medals at Table Tennis Championship

Accra, July 29, GNA - Ghana picked seven medals at the just ended Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) Zone II, Tournament dubbed "Laurent Gbagbo Table Tennis Youth Championship" held over the weekend in La Cote d'Ivoire.

Ghana won four gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals in the four day championship.

A statement issued by Kwame Amponfi Jnr, General Secretary of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), copied to GNA Sports said the gold medals were won by Samuel Akayade in the Under-15 singles competition with Derek Abrefa claiming gold in the Under-18 Boys category whilst Akayade and Abrefa combined effectively to win another gold medal in the Under-18 Doubles competition. The statement added that Cynthia Kwabi and Abrefa again won gold in the Under-18 Mixed Double competition. It said Kwabi went ahead to win a silver medal in the Under-18 females competition, with Isaac Davies winning bronze medal in the Under-15 and played alongside Akayade to win another bronze medal in the doubles of the male Under-15.

The statement said Ghana's team was sponsored by the National Sports Council, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and TV3 Network Limited. Six countries including Cote D'Ivoire (host), Burkina Faso, Ghana, Benin, Congo Brazzaville and Togo participated in the championship. Ghana's team comprised Cynthia Kwabi, Derek Abrefa, Felix Lartey (all Under-18 players and trainees of GIS), Samuel Akayade (Under-15 player)

of Koforidua Secondary Technical and Isaac Davies (Under-15 player) from

Cape Coast Catholic Jubilee School. Coach Anthony Owusu Ansah was the

Technical Head. The team was led by the Secretary General of the Ghana Table Tennis

Association who is also the Vice President of the Africa Table Tennis Federation Zone III. 29 July 09
